Frequent crashing when rendering video

I'm making videos as backgrounds for a puppet video series. For even a short 2-second video, SH3D usually crashes several times before finally giving in and completing the render (with YafaRay). Task Manager says its memory use sometimes peaks at 100%, but the CPU usage always stays pegged at 100% for the entire time it's rendering (even though I can watch YouTube videos and run MS Word without causing SH3D to crash).
What does that indicate to you? If I increased the memory from the current 16GB to 32GB, would SH3D run more smoothly? Or is the problem that the CPU is not powerful enough? My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-core 3.59 GHz, less than a year old.
