I looked into this and like sjb007 says it's a significant job. I stopped looking into options when it was clear that it wasn't going to be much use anyway because Sweet Home 3D only supports a limited set of material properties. For example, you can only have a single texture mapping (map_Kd) but none of the other mappings.
If you really need a special rendering export it to Blender and in Blender add all the extra material properties and texture mappings. Then render with one of the renderers supported by Blender.
The only thing that would justify another renderer in Sweet Home 3D is one that uses the GPU instead of the CPU that both current renderers use.
