cool How about sharing textures?

So far, this website features a very useful 3D models download page , to which every user can contribute.
I suggest you do the same with textures. I have photographed quite a few surfaces and arranged them into neat seamless textures which others might find useful for their projects. I would gladly share them with others, and I think the SH3D website would be the most appropriate place.
If you decide to open one, I'm game. smile

Re: How about sharing textures?

I had this idea in mind from the first day I added textures support in Sweet Home 3D. Creating the texture images available in Sweet Home 3D took me quite a lot time and I would be glad to propose the images created by other contributors. wink

My main concern about sharing textures is copyright issues. Believe me, many people just don't understand that redistributing or even using an image found on the Internet is legal only if the author of that image authorizes you to do it.
Maybe, using the same redistribution channel as 3D models would create an efficient copyright barrier, because it would oblige contributors to understand that they must be the author of the images they propose.
But this makes more work for me because I must update web pages accordingly when a contributor proposes a new image.

What do you think?
I'm open to any idea.

By the way, I don't know if you saw that message during Sweet Home 3D 2.3 development, but I added support for SH3T files which are dedicated to textures libraries, like SH3F files are dedicated to furniture libraries.

Re: How about sharing textures?

Hello all:

Here are some links I collected. No guarantee that all of these textures are usable, are free to use in every project, etc. Nevertheless, there's something for everybody.

Have fun!!

Hans

smile Re: How about sharing textures?

Well, for convienience's sake (yours as well as ours), I would prefer a direct upload to your site, without the detour via sourceforge.net. You could post a large disclaimer about copright issues that pops up for every uploader.
If you would rather do it via the same channel as furniture (sourceforge), then that won't stop me from uploading either wink, because it's your call of course, as you are responsible for the whole thing.
As for copyright, I am the author of the photographs and the post-processing (tiling) of my textures, but of course I am not responsible for the original design of the objects I photographed. I don't know how picky tile manufacuturers are about people photographing their products for CAD purposes... then again, many tiles are so generic that it's impossible to tell the manufacturer and the exact model.
I have my textures as square PNG graphics in resolutions up to 1000x1000(to avoid lossy compression), but I am ready to convert them into any standard size and format that you choose for your website - even if it means tackling that SH3T format of yours wink

@hansmex: thanks for posting these links. I will post my textures on one of them sooner or later if it doesn't work out here, but of course I would much prefer to do it here, because that's easiest to find for SH3D users.

cool Re: How about sharing textures?

For anyone who's interested: I uploaded my textures to

Blender for architecture

and

my DeviantArt gallery.

These are the mid-res versions that I use in SH3D. If you want the hi-res files, get them here, here and here (German only).

I hope these can be useful to others.

Re: How about sharing textures?

Hello,

Accidentally I found another great source for textures. Close to 9.000 textures ordered in 20 categories. Free to use, even in commercial projects.

http://archivetextures.net/

Happy designing!

Re: How about sharing textures?

Well! for this topic i think Hans way is the best to use to share textures...........share the link that you find interesting and where texture download is provided by the web sites in that way no copyright is violated!!

Dingenskirchen if you would like to share textures that you designed then just upload them to sourceforge.net........then you can create a thread here and just post the link to that texture where every Sweet Home 3D user will find out that new texture is been uploaded if they check out the thread.....what say??
