Feature "Drop Item..."

Hi,

i would like to have a feature letting me "drop" (selected) objects to the lowest possible height in plan. you know, sometimes you shoveling around the furniture and "somehow" tables or vases or whatsoever appear to land on top of another (group of) furniture. and mostly i recognize it in the (supposed to be) final render.

what do you guys think about that?

Macfrog,

Since you're asking for a reaction, here's mine.
I really can't see the use of this feature. Changing the height of an object would roughly be as much "work" as activating the drop-feature you request.

macfrog, I had a similar idea in mind for a time because if you drop a chair on a tree, its elevation will be equal to the tree height making it disappear most of the time from the 3D view. My idea would be to add a "preferred elevation for objects placed on top" property to each 3D model available in the catalog: for a tree this value would be 0, for computer desk that includes shelves, it would be equal to the desk elevation itself.

Hans,
i know what you mean, but, Emmanuel seems more likely to understand what i mean.

you could see it as an option:

mark a checkbox in preferences or import dialogs to "always drop/never stack" or something similar. the key feature has to be that the lowest possible height must be the real object surface!

the situation now is, afaik, the object being moved is stacked on top op the nearest bounding box, which could be, lets say, a group of furniture.
what i need is, the object to be placed must drop as far as possible on top of the very real surface of the underlying object.
please have a look at the following example:

when i move the round table shown below, it mostly ends up flying 80cm above floorlevel caused by the nearby handrail construction which is (only by its bounding box) surrounding the table.

so, i this case, i have to check the (messed up) z-position and change it (again, and again after moving it and so on).
second example:
when you look at my new gallery post, there is a bathroom scene i just finished (!!), where all the shampoo bottles had to be placed on top of an object, which was very tricky, i can tell. so, if i just could "drop" them - i really would like it!
