Re: Revit Files

Sweet Home 3D isn't able to read homes designed with other software yet.
You can import 3D models at OBJ, 3DS, DAE or KMZ format, but they will be handled as pieces of furniture.

Re: Revit Files

This question also came up in a private conversation the other day; an architect wanted to know whether he could give a client a copy of a relatively simple house plan, so the client could play with furnishing, colour choices etc. Just a simple, but accurate, copy of the home without the client having to learn or pay for Revit (not cheap).

If I understood correctly Revit can export to a range of different formats. Depending on needs and the complexity of plan, there are two possibilities that could be worth exploring.

  • The obvious one is exporting the house plan to an image file (bmp jpg png gif) and use SH3D Import background image as an outline template. Useful and easy, but maybe not what you had in mind.
  • But there may be another way if you wish to put some effort into it, and Revit can export wall data to a sensible format. This you would need to explore with Revit. Maybe using the free trial and maybe checking some older guides on the ascii dxf format. IF you manage to extract the wall data, it might be possible reformat that data to the .xml used in an SH3D file similar to the test in 7674 using a spreadsheet (Gnumeric) to turn a list of walls into Home.xml used by SH3D.

The latter may look complicated, but the basics worked quite well, even if some post editing with SH3D is to be expected. But then, SH3D has several simple features that will allow you to work quickly. Double click for rooms inside walls, join walls, etc.

The reason for this post is not to recommend the second approach as such, but it would be interesting to see whether someone more skilled could think of a way of doing this. Maybe even code a simple converter or create a plugin for SH3D. Maybe wishful thinking, but still, a way of sharing data might be a pretty good selling point for architects and SH3D both.

And if you feel like experimenting, please, post and share ideas.

Re: Revit Files

According to this page Revit can export in FBX format.
According to this page Blender can import FBX format.
Then... Blender can export in several formats that SH3D can read.

Re: Revit Files

Blender can export in several formats...
@hansmex. Yes, Blender is good for exchange models from one format to another, but there are other converters as well. From Blender to SH3D I would recommend using Collada, and then convert it to Wavefront/.obj with SH3D.
..revit converter is, that most of manufacturers have their products as revit or autocad or autodesk models
@brodbdie: I was not aware of Revit specific models that are free to copy. There are discussions online about Revit users being frustrated about not being able to share models (in non-Revit formats) without other users being able to copy them. Which again means that there probably is a way of converting the models you want. Provided, of course, the models are not copyright restricted.
Most of library i seen here are very old fashioned furnitures or more US-Goods
There is a limited range of models in the standard libraries, but the 3D models page links to both the free SH3D models page and numerous other sources to models you can use. If you look through some of the creations in the forum, you will see how many users rely on models from other sources and models they make themselves. The 3D warehouse (use .dae if you do not want to go via Sketchup) is arguably the most popular, if not the best in terms of quality. And many manufacturers also offer models in SH3D compatible formats (.obj, .dae .3ds). And, not to forget, if you think certain models should be included in the standard libraries, you can try asking in the forum. Many SH3D users have extensive libraries and will share them if they are of interest to other users.

Re: Revit Files

If you want to convert FBX files to OBJ format, you may use free Autodesk FBX Converter.

Most of library i seen here are very old fashioned furnitures or more US-Goods
It's funny, some European users of Sweet Home 3D criticize the US style of some furniture, and American users criticize their European style! biggrin
About being old-fashioned or not, don't forget that the furniture libraries available on sweethome3D.com were designed by contributors and are freely redistributable under CC-BY license or the like. When I started to program this software, I never thought we could reach 1200 pieces one day! If you want more fashionable stuff, feel free to contribute yourself.

About importing home designs from Revit, maybe it will be soon possible through IFC files which support in Sweet Home 3D has been in the works for a while. Stay tuned! wink

Re: Revit Files

A IFC plugin was in progress but the work was frozen, we need to request the developer to priorize IFC import export
