And you, how do you use your Sweet Home 3D? Episode 22
Felipe Campoverde is a software engineer and a teacher in Cuenca, Ecuador.
Hola Ecuador y hola a todos los usuarios en Sudamérica!
His students were very happy to use Sweet Home 3D and Felipe thought it could be a recognition to present their projects and accepted to answer to our questions:
- What and where do you teach?
I am the computer teacher @ Asian American School located in Cuenca.
- When did you discover Sweet Home 3D?
I was in need of a design for a home that my parents wanted to build. I searched a program on Internet and found Sweet Home 3D. Without any tutorial, I was able to make and finalized the drawing which became a reality. The home was built according to the specifications of my drawings.
- Was it the first time that you used it at school?
Our school district promotes projects where teaching students require the use of math and programming language. I decided to teach Sweet Home 3D as it uses math logic and it is fun and user friendly for my students to learn.
- Can you explain the homework you asked to the students?
As the school is growing everyday, the focus of the project was to imagine how the school will look as it grows. We planned ahead and took measurements of the installations, then they drew the school using Sweet Home 3D and finalized with the scale model.
- What was the pedagogical aim?
The pedagogical aim was to achieve an understanding of the fundamental technologies and computing tools, so they learn to use the computer as a work tool, knowing its accuracy and capacity. We also wanted to train the critical, reflective and analytical skills of students, their ability for searching and solving problems of daily life, to become proactive leaders, interested in the new and changing technologies that have revolutionized the world of information and communication with a global vision of their environment.
- Pupils also had to make a model. What did the children prefer? Designing in 2D/3D or building the scale models?
They loved the 3D because they were looking at the final product but I told them they needed to design the 2D first to see the 3D done.
Well, the scale models where also a lot of fun to build especially because they had to work off from the 2D designs drawn in the computer lab and supply the rooms with the furniture selected from the program as close as the real deal.
- What lessons can be drawn from this experience with Sweet Home 3D
My main experiences was the inspiration I gave to a few students to dream of being an architect, an engineer or an interior designer. Also to help them to work as a team using the values of Respect, Solidarity, Tolerance, Cooperation, Punctuality and most of all to value technology and the benefits of it.
- Will you begin again next year?
Yes, I will teach again the same format to my new students but with a different aim. For the rest of the year we are introducing my students to Scratch*. They are so excited about this program too.
* About the same subject, read also the experience of Sébastien Canet, a French teacher.
Thank you very much, Felipe, and congratulations to all your students!
