Upgrade from 6.2 to 6.6

Hardware
Linux Mint 20.1
Java 11.0.11
16Gb Ram

I have SweetHome3D version 6.2. I want to upgrade to version 6.6.
I have downloaded the file from the SweetHome3D webpage. It runs fine on my computer just fine when I execute the file from the extracted file location. But it does not install on my computer.
I tried erasing the old version first to see if that was an issue but it wasn't.
My Software manager will only install version 6.2.

What am I missing?
The install instructions on the SweetHome3D webpage are vague and unhelpful.

Re: Upgrade from 6.2 to 6.6

You do not need to install the version you have downloaded from the website.
I'm working with Ubuntu and Mint should be very similar to Ubuntu.

So, copy the downloaded folder to where you want it (mine is in /usr/share/SweetHome3D-6.6).

Then go to /home/"your_username"/.local/share/applications and create a file called "SweetHome3D.desktop".

And this file should contain the following lines:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Sweet Home 3D
GenericName=Interior 2D design application with 3D preview
GenericName[de]=Innenraumplaner
Comment=Interior design Java application for quickly choosing and placing furniture on a house 2D plan drawn by the end-user with a 3D preview
Comment[de]=Innenraumplaner zum Auswählen und Platzieren von Möbeln auf einem 2D-Hausplan mit 3D-Vorschau
Path=/usr/share/SweetHome3D-6.6
Exec="/usr/share/SweetHome3D-6.6/SweetHome3D" %U
Icon=/usr/share/SweetHome3D-6.6/SweetHome3DIcon.png
StartupNotify=true
StartupWMClass=com-eteks-sweethome3d-SweetHome3D
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=SweetHome3D;2DGraphics;3DGraphics;Graphics;
Keywords=interior;design;2D;3D;home;house;furniture;java;
MimeType=application/sweethome3d;
Name[de_CH]=SweetHome3D

Edit: of course you can edit the german parts in these lines to your preferred language.

Re: Upgrade from 6.2 to 6.6

Additional instructions.

1. Once the desktop file is created the program can be launched from the applications launcher. And when program is open the launch icon can be added to the favourites. I did not know that about .desktop files.

2. To add a plugin to the program
Go to /Home/.eteks and create a directory called the program name you used for SweetHome3D. Then in that directory create a directory called: plugins Put a copy of the plugin file in the plugins directory and extract it there (double click on file name top open and extract). Extract to the plugins directory. Launch the program (and if the plugin works with that version) and the plugin will appear in the Tools menu option.

RE adding plug-in

I gave wrong instructions.

Instead:
Put the downloaded plugin file in the directory /.etecs/sweethome3d/plugins
Create plugins directory if it did not exist.
Do not extract.

Re: Upgrade from 6.2 to 6.6

The folder where plug-ins are stored under Linux is .eteks/sweethome3d/plugins in your home folder, .eteks being spelled with a k, not a c.
