Re: Wishlist: IFC as Project file
|
Maybe I overstated there a little. Sure, SH3D and IFC have levels, walls, doors and windows - so do a lot of applications. But working with IFC (not just a one way import) means you have to handle a lot of stuff that SH3D doesn't currently understand. If not you lose tons of information on the other side of SH3D.
Just one "different way" of working - Defining a gable end wall: In SH3D create a wall, split it in two, then set the start/end heights of both walls to the necessary heights. In Bonsai create a single wall as tall as the peak, define two half space planes, and use them to cut away both slopes. (This method by the way is much easier to create accurate internal walls in lofts, because I cut them to the roof slope, instead of having to calculate the correct end heights.)
As far as I'm aware so far, IFC has no concept of wall start/end heights, and SH3D has no concept of half space planes.
In addition I can also use those planes to cut a wall at the bottom, create an overhanging wall end, or cut a slope front-back instead of side-side. I can also create arbitrary void shapes and use them to cut all kinds of strange shapes out of the wall (or slab, or roof, etc). I used that to cut flared window reveals in my walls for example. Would it be possible to translate that into SH3D wall parts? I don't think so, not unless SH3D walls are significantly changed so they can handle all IFC features. You could maybe create dumb objects instead, but then they wouldn't be walls with the features of native SH3D walls.
Which is all a bit immaterial, because as you state, it would be a lot of work. I have no idea what Space Mushroom's plans are, but I suspect IFC support isn't in there.
So to reiterate... if the OP wants to work with IFC, use something that understands IFC.
