Latest upgrade (7.6)
I received an e-mail with an upgrade of the free version of Sweet Home 3D for Mac, to v.7.6. When clicking on the link in the e-mail, the downloading process starts automatically and results in one volume icon and one dmg icon on the desktop. I’m used to an installing process to start when clicking on the dmg, but here only a folder opens with the app icon together with a lot of txt icons. Meanwhile I have icons of lots of old versions in my app folder. What shall I do to get rid of the old versions and install the new version in a proper way?

According to the Sweet Home 3D download page the latest version is still 7.5. Carefully check because this might be a phishing/hack email.

Good lord! Are people still this ignorant of basic precautions? It's not 100% certain, but having clicked on it your system is untrustworthy. You have zero idea what clicking on that dmg did to your system. Keyloggers. Remote access. File exfiltration. Random crypto-currency mining. DDOS bot. Ransomware.
The safest thing you can do right now is what any good security person will tell you. You need to restore to a factory fresh image, and reset any and every password (local and online), call your bank(s) and put a temporary freeze on your accounts until you have sanitized everything and made sure you haven't been compromised.
Do not under any circumstance use this device to connect to any banking or sensitive sites. (Because of the Apple ecosystem, if you have a linked phone I'd be nervous about that too, but I don't know Apple stuff well enough to know for sure.)
If you were so careless to click on that link I seriously doubt you have the technical skill to do all this. You will probably require the services of a professional.
Last suggestion: find a course on on-line safety, and take it.
Or you can roll the dice, and maybe sometime soon you wake up and find your bank balance is zero.
Shows a 7.6 for Mac and Win (no Linux?!?!) that is not announced on the blog or in the forum that was pushed on the 11th. (As an IT professional I still wouldn't trust this until there was some form of announcement in case there had been some compromise of the Sourceforge account - it happens.)
However, if Space Mushrooms are sending e-mail links to directly download applications then they must stop this. It is a very bad practice to teach people.

Thank you for your concern, however slightly alarmistic :-) Although I understand that sometimes high alert is certainly necessary. I do check the source of anything I click on, though, so I had quite good confidence that this source was legit. The main problem, I think, is software not updating via Appstore. To ask users to click on links in e-mails is not the most professional way to offer upgrades. I could possible do also with an e-mail asking me to upgrade via the app's menu. But looking through the menues for Sweet Home, I find no choice for "Looking for upgrades". I also tried to find a direct way to Sweet Home's support, but since it is hidden deep in the fine print all I found was this forum, where I still haven't received a helpful answer. The second search actually resulted in an e-mail adress to their own support, but after mailing them I still haven't received a reply. Maybe I'll just scrap the whole app - I doesn't use it so often anyway.

But looking through the menues for Sweet Home, I find no choice for "Looking for upgrades".
In the preferences dialog you can check "Check updates at program kaunch" and it also has a button for an immediate check.
