3D mode zoomed in too much?

Greetings,
I didn't know where to ask this and it is in fact only related to 3D mode (both aerial and virtual visit modes).
Meaning that I am expecting this to be moved.

I have a modest apartment for which I don't have plans.
Using SH3D to create plans was the obvious choice.
Took the apartment's measures and started my work based on the 2D model only.
But now that I am close to finishing, I went for a 3D tour of the apartment and somehow it looks funny/weird.
Somehow the apartment looks much smaller in 3D than it really is.
It's as if I was walking around my apartment looking through a 1.2-1.3x zoom binoculars.
The height actually looks close to reality but the width and depth look really weird/smaller than they really are.
Is this to be expected?
Could I be doing something wrong?
If all this is normal, is there any way to smooth this effect so that it is not that noticeable?
I'm running SH3D 3.0 on Fedora 14 with openjdk 1.6.0_22.
All help is welcome even.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

Re: 3D mode zoomed in too much?

John,

Try this: 3D view --> Modify and change Visitor field of view from its standard 63 degrees to a (slightly) larger angle. It widens your field of view and may give you a more natural look at your apartment.

Re: 3D mode zoomed in too much?

You're the first to report this feeling but in a way, I'm not so astonished by your comment. It's probably due to the fact that moving the mouse requires much less effort than moving one's body. wink
Human field of view is something not so easy to simulate too.
Nevertheless, try to increase the visitor field of view in 3D view modification dialog. A larger field of view might give you the impression you'll have more space.

By the way, if you still have some doubts, take pictures with a real camera and compare them with the 3D view computed by Sweet Home 3D. For your information, a 63° field of view matches a 28 mm wide angle lens of a 24x36 camera.

Re: 3D mode zoomed in too much?

Thank you both for your comments.
I've tried the FoV as far as the 120º that it allows.
It looks as if rooms have more area with FoV at 75º, 90º, 100º and 120º but there's still something strange with the aspect ratio.
Maybe this is just a feeling but even my wife asked me "what's, is this our living room??".
But next time I'll try to capture some photos and post them here.
Cheers

Re: 3D mode zoomed in too much?

John,

There's also quite a difference between a 3D tour in the 3D preview <!> window, or a 3D tour with the Create photo or the Create video function. The absence of shadows in the preview window makes everything look "synthetic".

I assume you did check your measures with the dimension tool, so there's no error in that department?

Re: 3D mode zoomed in too much?

Hi hansmex,
Thanks for your reply.
I didn't know that the 3D tour had differences when comparing with the create photo/video.
I will test them both and see if they look more like the real thing.
I did check several times my "real" dimensions and I recheck several times rooms' dimensions of my virtual home.
They are all accurate, that's for sure.
Unfortunately my phone's built in camera (the only digital camera that I have) is damaged and I can't post a real picture and a virtual picture so that we can compare them.
And I don't think there's anything that we can do until we can make that comparison.
I'll post back when I get a photo.
Thanks for the support you've been giving me.
Regards and a Merry Xmas
