Columns and beams

I am completely new to this programme so please excuse me if this has been already covered.
I want to try to put columns and beams in my plan.
These are for the footings of the building. For example the columns would be 30cm square and 90cm tall with a spacing of 1m to 3m centers depending on what was above.
Any Idea how to do this and also how to do levels below ground level?
Thank you in advance for your help.
